Image obtained by typing "z" in the Cairo bitmap font, included
with the first Macintosh.
At this time, neither the Dogcow nor Clarus have been recognised.
No one notices this little dog in the Cairo symbol zoo... No-one
except a few developers working on some printing software.
Name: -
Author: unknown - 1986
Adapted from the Cairo font to display print settings in LaserWriter 4.0.
This animal had no name or species, but in Apple's corridors some people began chanting: "Is it a dog, or is it a cow?"
Name: Clarus
Author: unknown - 1987
This is the official Clarus, used in Apple's printing software since 1987. It's a large version of the previous one.
Name: Clarus
Author: unknown - 1987
This is the icon (32x32 pixels), used by Apple's DTS team until 1994 to indicate for "not fully tested" applications distributed on Developers' CDs.
It's also used in LaserWriter settings page for "Precision alignment" option.
My prefered version.
Name : Icons
Author: unknown - 1987-94
Official Apple icons (32x32 pixels), used by Apple developper team for sample code software, until 1994.
Name: DogCattle
Author: Tom Maremaa - 1996
This is the smallest known Clarus. She was used to illustrate the 'sicn' resource in TechNote #1031 "DogCow goes VR" by Tom Maremaa.
Susan has redesigned the LaserWriter Clarus to give her a more bovine head and make her look closer to the Cairo original.
They're only small differences but she looks much better!
Name: "HTML Sample"
Author: Apple Lab - 2000
HTML is a sample application that demonstration how o use HTMLRenderLib in MacOS9 and carbon.
Clarus appears in this application as the application icon and as a button in HTML sample pages.
It's a very small Clarus : 16x13 pixels
Smaller than the DogCattle but she doesn't look cool.
Clarus official items
Goodies released by Apple around Clarus for
WWDC 1988
Name: Moof! on shirts
Author: unknown - 1988
Clarus appears on an official Apple T-Shirt. But, in fact, it's
not the real Clarus - it's the design from the Cairo
font.
Nom : Moof! badge
Author : unknown - 1988
Official Moof badge, distribute by Apple to Macintosh developpers in 1988
Multimedia
Some multimedia variations made in Apple Labs,
include QuickTime movies, QTVR, cursors and game.
Name: moof!
Authors: Mark Harlan and Scott Zimmerman - 1989
They record this sound for the first Developper CD "Phil and Dave's excellent CD"; it's a mix between a real cow and Scott Zimmerman !
Name: (QuickTime)
Authors: Guillermo Ortiz and Scott Zimmerman - 1991
Guillermo Ortiz made two QuickTime movies starring Clarus to illustrate an article about QuickTime 1.0 in Develop Magazine #7: "You Oughta Be in the Movies."
Scott Zimmerman helped with the 3D rendering and composed the music.
Those movies are not of great artistic interest but they do feature Clarus!
Name: New DogCow (The Dogcow meets System 7)
Author: Michael D Murie / Flying Kiwi - 1991 ?
This movie, directed by Michael D. Murie and produced by Flying Kiwi, was on the CD "QuickTime beta". After System 7 is installed, Clarus transforms herself into the "New DogCow" - a kind of 3D DogCow in armour. Her adventures are based on those of RoboCop.
You can also see an isometric 3D Clarus at the end.
Another QuickTime VR movie made by Apple's developers. It's shows an interesting beer called "Moof Bräu". No one can tell us if it was any good or not, and it seems it was never put on the market.
Created by the QuickTime developer team as an example of how to create VR movies in "VR Cookbook", this 3D model was later reused to animate Clarus in a simple game, MoofWars, by Timothy Carroll.
This VR movie is a very good way to understand the 2D nature of Clarus in our 3D world, so you can understand why she remains invisible when she's in front of you !
